Nicolas Lapierre was delighted to record his second GP2 Series win of the season at Spa-Francorchamps, the Frenchman claiming this victory arguably means more as it came in the ‘proper' feature race.
Also only the second win of his GP2 career, Lapierre's maiden triumph came in the reverse grid assisted sprint race at Bahrain, but after securing pole position around the Belgian circuit he simply survived a dramatic dash to the first corner to come away a lights-to-flag winner.
Indeed, while Lapierre's win for DAMS comes somewhat too late for him, he was at least pleased to have completed a victory in the longer feature race and was not aided by being placed at the head of the grid.
“It's very good for me, for the team as well,” he said. “We won the race in Bahrain but it was the sprint race which is easier to win, this one is a proper one. We got the pole position yesterday and today we were quite fast and I think we had a good strategy.
“That shows to everybody that we can do it. Obviously it's a bit late, with two races to the end, but at least we did do it, which is good for me and the team.”
Lapierre isn't ruling out a double victory either, not least when his strong pace, the copious overtaking opportunities and an unusual reverse grid order in front of him is taken into account.
“It's difficult to expect anything from the Sunday race. A lot of things can happen but the good thing is that on this track you can overtake. We will try our best to come back and see what we can do. We have nothing to lose from a championship point of view so we just have to push.”
