Timo Glock is looking to follow in the footsteps of
Nico Rosberg and
Lewis Hamilton by stepping up to
Formula 1 in 2008 after securing the GP2 Series title in resounding fashion at Valencia.
Although Glock is no stranger to Formula 1 having made his debut for Jordan Grand Prix in 2004 and has been
BMW Sauber's test driver for the past two seasons, he is yet to secure a full time drive in the championship.
He is hoping the resounding success of predecessors Rosberg and Hamilton in Formula 1 will lead to a drive with a good team in 2008 and with Toyota and
Williams having already been mooted, the German is likely to be flush with offers.
“In the end it's just the place to be to make your way into
F1, and the racing is just hard, and you've seen Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton as champions for the last 2 years, and Lewis is almost winning the F1 championship now!
“So GP2 is definitely the place to be to make your way to
Formula One. But it was so hard this year, with the problems that we had, and in the end it is the championship that is the closest to Formula One, and we get to race in front of all the Formula One teams, and that's just so important.”
Taking the title in style with victory in the final race of the season around the Spanish circuit, Glock dominated from the lights to come home a clear five second winner over Javier Villa. It was enough to give him an advantage of 11 points over season-long rival Lucas di Grassi.
“After all the hard work over the year, all the bad luck and bad races like in Spa, and the hard races like yesterday which was just a special race, today when I got here I said I would try and win the race for the team!
