Andy Soucek's second podium appearance in as many GP2 Series weekends delighted the David Price Racing team at Valencia's Circuit Ricardo Tormo, coming at the end of a tough season for the British squad.
Although Christian Bakkerud had another weekend to forget as his miserable debut campaign closed without any points, DPR was able to take some positives into a winter of testing and preparing for the inaugural GP2 Asia series, which kicks off in January.
In a largely uneventful race, Soucek shrugged off the distraction of an aborted start to make a clean getaway from third on the grid, and maintained his position into the first corner. Although a challenge from fellow Spaniard Marcos Martinez briefly pushed the DPR car down to fourth, Soucek was quickly back into a podium spot and, when Martinez spun himself out of contention, was able to hold station for the entire 29-lap distance.
“I am pleased we could finish in another podium position," Soucek said afterwards, "We had a really tough start to this season, but we've shown in these two last weekends that we have the pace to run at the front end of the grid and that we can be up there fighting with the frontrunners.
"The race was tough on our tyres, but I kept my head down and tried to be consistent keeping up with the front two. I had to defend from Borja Garcia towards the end, and 29 laps on the tyres made it a tough battle but, overall, this is a great end to a hard, but enjoyable, season.”
The former Spanish F3 champion, who won in last year's World Series by Renault before breaking into GP2, admitted that there had been a definite change of fortune for his side of the DPR garage just after mid-season.
