Andreas Zuber expects to return to the GP2 Series for a third crack at the title in 2008, claiming that he has unfinished business after a disappointing campaign with iSport International last year.
The UAE-based Austrian had expected to be among the frontrunners in 2007, but ran into a mix of bad luck and mistakes that scuppered his title challenge before the season was at its half-way point. While iSport team-mate
Timo Glock made his way, painstakingly, towards the crown - and, subsequently, a seat in Toyota's F1 line-up for 2008 - Zuber was left to chase race wins and points in order to help his team clinch both crowns. Despite that, however, the former World Series by Renault pacesetter refuses to look negatively on his campaign.
"2007 was not a frustrating season - at all," he insisted to
Crash.net, "After all, I won one race and gained a lot of experience during the season. My luck could have been better though..."
A run of gearbox problems prevented Zuber from completing the first lap in three races early in the season - something that the driver maintains was down to a faulty batch of parts - while
that accident with Glock in the French round at Magny-Cours meant another instant retirement.
"One always has to aim high, but whether these expectations are met are a different matter," he says of the decision to go with iSport, "I am not aware that I could have been responsible for the [gearbox] problems, which only had to do with the materials and, as for the accident, I don't think about that anymore. That's history...."
Zuber is due to confirm his plans for 2008 at a press conference next week, but GP2 is high on the agenda, despite both recent tests with Honda's F1 team and iSport's announcement that it has filled its two seats with Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna.
"I hope to be in a GP2 car once more - I have unfinished business and I plan to settle it," he claimed, before admitting that he will always harbour ambitions of moving to
F1.
