Andreas Zuber will return to deal with unfinished business in the GP2 Series, but will do so with his third different team in as many seasons in the grand prix feeder category.
Having previously run Trident Racing and iSport International, the 24-year old Austrian will hope to fight for the championship with Minardi Piquet Sports, a deal having been struck following the successful conclusion of sponsorship negotiations during the last couple of weeks.
“I had several opportunities thanks to successful GP2 tests in November but, after a lot of consideration, I decided in favour of Minardi Piquet Sports as the team had been vice-champion in 2006 with Nelson Piquet," Zuber explained, "It is a highly professional team which can help me to reach my goals, and I am completely confident that it will provide me with a correspondingly fast car. If so, it should be possible to further improve my balance in the GP2 Series. So far, I have celebrated one victory in each year - 2006 in Istanbul and 2007 at
Silverstone - but I want to be counted among the favourites.”
Although he also tested
F1 machinery with Honda over the off-season, Zuber's focus will be entirely on his GP2 campaign, especially following Honda's decision to take more experienced countryman Alex Wurz as its test driver for 2008. Despite his determination to battle for the title, however, Zuber knows it won't be easy.
“I expect a very balanced championship this year," he noted, "Many drivers have already gathered experience at F1 tests and compete in several very strong teams in the GP2 series. Therefore, it would be presumptuous to picture myself as the winner already.”
Zuber is expected to partner second-year driver Roldan Rodriguez at Minardi Piquet Sports in 2008.
