Andy Soucek posted the fastest time of the opening free practice session for this weekend's inaugural GP2 Asia meeting, but the rest of the field was denied the chance to overhaul the DPR man after red flags brought a premature halt to proceedings.
Spaniard Soucek quickly re-established his front-running credentials in the yellow-and-black DPR machine, clocking a 1min 21.870secs effort that put him at the head of the timesheets but, with just over a third of the half-hour session remaining, Luca Filippi made a mistake and crashed his Qi-Meritus car into the wall, bringing out the red flags, which continued to fly until time expired.
The Italian had been among those chasing Soucek's mark, but had to settle for 13th spot in the order as his team set about recovering and repairing the car ahead of this morning's qualifying session.
Putting pressure on Soucek was therefore left in the hands of Bruno Senna, the Brazilian claiming second place in the order, but four-tenths shy of the fleeing Spaniard, while Adrian Valles, Romain Grosjean and Kamui Kobayashi rounded out the top five, the Japanese a full second slower than the pacesetter in a lop-sided session.
