Having set the pace during pre-season testing, Romain Grojean enjoyed the perfect start to the inaugural GP2 Asia series as he became the first rookie to win twice in a weekend since
Lewis Hamilton at
Silverstone back in 2006.
Dominating the first race left Grosjean in eighth place on the grid for race two thanks to the reverse grid rules but a fine start meant the ART Grand Prix driver was up into fifth place as the field streamed into the first corner.
A gearbox issue for Luca Filippi allowed Grosjean up into fourth place and – following a Safety Car period – he got the jump on Karun Chandhok into turn one to go third.
Second place followed after Hiroki Yoshimoto was forced wide by Harald Schlegelmilch as the Latvian returned to the track after a pit-stop and it released Grosjean to then chase down race leader Fairuz Fauzy, taking the lead when the Malaysian driver made a small error and going on to secure his second race win of the weekend.
"I wasn't really going for the win, but I was hoping for a podium. I knew I had the pace to do it," he said. "At the restart, I was P4 and I passed Yoshimoto. That's when I realised that I could go for the win.
"I honestly didn't think I could achieve such a good result here. However, it doesn't mean anything: I'm still learning and I will now concentrate on Indonesia."
