After weeks of waiting, and following the opening round of the new GP2 Asia Series, Christian Bakkerud has finally been able to confirm that he
will race in the main GP2 Series this summer.
Having made his debut with DPR in last year's GP2 campaign, the Dane switched to Super Nova for the Asian series and will remain with David Sears' outfit after inking a deal for the rest of the year. Although he endured a troubled time at the opening round of the 'winter series' in Dubai two weekends ago, Bakkerud had clearly done enough to convince Sears that he was worthy of a punt for the rest of 2008, despite apparently facing opposition for the seat from other drivers.
“We are really pleased to have finalised a deal with Christian for the GP2 series," Sears said, "We believe that we can really work well together to achieve better results than Christian did last season. He has recovered from his back problems and seems genuinely a lot happier than before.
"We are pleased he is on board for the GP2 Asia series, which gives us all a chance for sustained improvement, and we see Christian as a good team player. Together with his new team-mate, Alvaro Parente, we think they will compliment each other and drive the team forward to achieve good results in the forthcoming 2008 season.”
Having had his maiden season in GP2 blighted by a persistent back problem, Bakkerud has worked hard over the winter to ensure that there will be no repeat in 2008 and, despite being prevented from posting a decent result in Dubai, is looking forward to proving his potential with Super Nova.
“This is a great day for me and it vindicates the hard work which has been put in by myself and the Super Nova team in winter testing,” the happy Dane admitted, "There is mutual admiration and a belief that together we can achieve strong results and mount a sustained challenge for the GP2 main series title.
