Pointless weekend for Kobayashi, d'Ambrosio.

The DAMS team saw a tough weekend at Sentul come to a disappointing finish after Kamui Kobayashi and Formula Master champion Jérôme d'Ambrosio were unable to open the team's account in the GP2 Asia series in Indonesia.

The weekend started in difficult fashion for both drivers in the limited practice session, with Kobayahi suffering from over-heating issues on his car from the moment he hit the track. Those issues would limit him to 23rd place on the grid for the feature race, but he wasn't even able to take the start when the issue reared its head again on the formation lap.

It left the Japanese racer down in 23rd again for the shorter spring race and he gambled on dry tyres despite wet conditions that forced the race to start behind the Safety Car. Unfortunately, conditions didn't improve enough for him to make the most of the gamble and he had to settle for 15th place at the finish.

“In the free sessions I ran into an overheating problem,” he said. “The mechanics did a great job, checked everything and changed all the parts they could. Unfortunately, there was little improvement and the only solution would have been to replace the engine so my qualifying suffered from this. I was in the pits when the track was dry enough to put on dry-weather tyres. Just when I was able to go out, another shower fell. In the race itself, I was unable to complete the formation lap and I had to give up because of the overheating problem.

“This morning the overheating problem that had afflicted my car all weekend was finally fixed. Unfortunately, I had to start from 23rd place on the grid and my chances of scoring points were almost non-existent unless I took a gamble. So we decided to start of dry weather tyres, and it would have paid off if the track conditions had improved more quickly. We've been very unlucky this weekend, and we'll soon forget Sentul to concentrate all the better on the rest of the championship.”
