Kamui Kobayashi's new GP2 Series lap record at the Circuit de Catalunya lasted less than twelve hours as testing with the new Dallara chassis continued apace in Spain.
The top three drivers in the morning session in Barcelona all got under the DAMS pilot's 1min 26.806secs best from Tuesday, with Bruno Senna adding his name to the list of those to have topped a session in pre-season, before Giorgio Pantano lowered the benchmark even further after lunch, leading no fewer than eleven drivers under the overnight target.
The Italian veteran ended the two-day test by establishing a new unofficial lap record for GP2 at the circuit, stopping the clocks at 1min 26.351secs on his second outing with Racing Engineering to send the Spanish outfit to next week's official launch at Paul Ricard on a high.
The afternoon session started 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled and lasted for three-and-a-half hours to make up for the shortened morning session, which was curtailed due to exceptionally windy conditions. The Circuit de Catalunya was not the only one affected either, with the World Series by Renault test down the coast in Valencia having to be halted after a marquee was blown from the top of the main building.
In all, some 13 drivers took advantage of the elongated track time to post times quicker than 1min 27secs, despite the fact that the session was again interrupted by numerous red flags.
The top 17 all got to within a second of Pantano's best, but it was the Italian's 2007 team-mate Vitaly Petrov (Campos), ART Grand Prix duo Romain Grosjean and Luca Filippi, and Spaniard Adrian Valles (FMSI) who rounded out the top five. Day one pacesetter Kobayashi was sixth fastest in both sessions, with Tuesday morning's fastest man, Pastor Maldonado followed up a strong third spot in the morning with a slower 15th after lunch.
Senna shrugged off the worsening conditions to post the fastest time of the early session, clocking 1min 26.396secs to lead GP2 Asia pacesetter Grosjean by more than three tenths.
