Kobayashi targets top three overall after second win of GP2 Asia Series.

If Kamui Kobayashi had had his enthusiasm for the regular GP2 Series boosted by a maiden win in the Asia Series at Sepang, a second victory in Bahrain helped push levels through the roof.

The DAMS driver started from sixth place on the reversed sprint race grid, but finished lap one in third spot. He then passed Vitaly Petrov on track and took advantage of Romain Grosjean's problems to move into a lead he would not relinquish.

“Yesterday, I reckoned that a rostrum finish was a possibility and that would already have been a good result,” Kobayashi claimed, “Winning the race is fantastic! I've been on the rostrum twice this weekend and I've scored twelve points, so I'm well placed to snatch third place in the championship. My motivation was already strong but, today, it's been tripled!”

Kobayashi's third podium in as many races helped confirm DAMS in fifth place in the teams' standings, just six points out of second place with the two races in Dubai this weekend remaining.

“We're absolutely delighted with today's result,” team manager Eric Boullier commented, “We reckoned that, starting from sixth place, a rostrum finish was on the cards, but we did much better than expected and Kamui scored his second victory of the season.

“He pushed until he took the lead and then nursed his car and tyres. Now we're determined to give our all in Dubai in the next meeting to finish the championship on a high note.”
