As expected, Adam Carroll's brief tenure of the second seat at Fisichella Motor Sport International will come to an end following his outings in Turkey and Monaco, with reigning British F3 champion Marko Asmer becoming the first Estonian to compete in the GP2 Series after signing for the remainder of the season.
The 23-year old will join the team for the second day of this week's mid-season test at Paul Ricard, before making his race debut later in the month, as the series resumes alongside the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours.
FMSI has already fielded three drivers this season, with Adrian Valles starting the campaign before moving to BCN Competicion and paving the way for Carroll to make a brief return to GP2. The Italian team also had another Spaniard, Andy Soucek on its books before the summer series began - Soucek having severed ties with DPR after one round of the Asia Series - but ditched the former Spanish F3 champion on the eve of his home round in Barcelona, citing sponsorship problems that Soucek denies. Now Asmer arrives to partner Roldan Rodriguez, who was drafted in alongside Valles for the opening event of the year.
Asmer won the Nordic, Finnish, Baltic and Estonian karting championships in one season, and later dominated the 2001 world championships, before moving into single-seaters, in Formula Ford, in 2003, taking five victories in his debut year and finishing second in the Formula Ford Festival at
Brands Hatch. His graduation to F3 did not go as smoothly, however, and, after a learning year in 2004, he scored six podiums and two poles in the 2005 British championship. He then moved to the Japan series for 2006, taking one win and finishing seventh in the drivers' championship, before juggling both the Japanese and British championships last season. Despite the logistical problems that threw up, he dominated the UK series, taking eleven wins and two further podiums to seal the title with three rounds to go.
