GP2 » BCN resorts to Iaconelli.

Wednesday, 18th June 2008

Brazilian journeyman Carlos Iaconelli fills vacant seat at BCN Competicion following Andy Soucek's decision to continue GP2 career with Super Nova.

Having appeared to miss out on landing the services of GP2 Series veteran Andy Soucek for the remainder of the 2008 season, BCN Competicion has turned to rookie Carlos Iaconelli instead.

Prior to shouldering the Barcelona-based team's testing workload at Paul Ricard last week, Soucek was reportedly in an advanced stage of 'negotiations to confirm the collaboration for the remainder of the season', but subsequently jumped at the chance to rejoin David Sears' front-running Super Nova operation when it became apparent that Christian Bakkerud's back complaint would require further rest.

Soucek had previously replaced the Dane at the Istanbul double-header, and has raced with DPR in both the Asia and summer series, having been cast aside by FMSI on the eve of the season.

BCN, meanwhile, has not been free from the increasingly-common round of musical chairs afflicting GP2, with Adrian Valles switching camps from FMSI to replace Italian Paolo Nocera, who found himself out of his depth, and now Iaconelli being called in to replace Milos Pavlovic, whose absence since Monaco has still not been fully explained. The Serb qualified for both races in the Principality, but was reportedly 'indisposed' when it came to taking the start on Friday's feature following what the team suggested was an overnight health issue.

Brazilian Iaconelli will replace the Serb from this weekend's French round at Magny-Cours, making his GP2 debut at the wheel of the #27 car after being a bit-part players in the past couple of World Series by Renault campaigns. He was without a ride in the series this season.
