Bruno Senna secured provisional pole for the latest rounds of the GP2 Series at Magny-Cours in dramatic fashion after spinning off into the wall at the conclusion of his pole-setting lap.

The iSport International man posted a time of 1min 22.250secs in the session which saw him secure pole position by just 0.037secs ahead of home driver Romain Grosjean. That only told part of the story however as Senna lost control of his car as he crossed the line and spun into the wall – damaging the rear of his car in the process and bringing out the red flags.

"I'm obviously delighted to take pole, but that wasn't quite how I'd planned to do it!" Senna reflected. "The car was really well balanced today - perfect, in fact - but every time I tried to put a lap together I was delayed by traffic. When it came to my final run I just gave it everything I had and, unfortunately, the car got away from me at the final chicane.

"I lost a bit of time as I approached the line because I was fighting to regain control and had my foot on the brakes, but overall it was clearly a decent lap. It was my final chance to set a really good time and the incident was just one of those things.

"The impact didn't feel too heavy and I hope, for the team's sake, that I haven't done too much damage. The car felt absolutely fantastic and I'm in a perfect position to capitalise on that."

The battle for pole proved to be closely fought throughout, and at the conclusion of the session, just 0.051secs covered the top three with Giorgio Pantano slotting into third place. Andy Zuber took fourth for Piquet Sports, with Sebastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi rounding out the top six.

Traffic proved to be an issue throughout the closely-fought session, which saw the top 16 drivers covered by less than a second, and Ho-Pin Tung, Alvaro Parente and Luca Filippi all suffered spins during the session while pushing for quick times. Jerome D'Ambrosio also went off into the gravel trap and his error would bring an end to any quick times with yellow flags being thrown as a result.
