Bruno Senna has admitted that it was his fault he crashed out on his final qualifying lap at Magny Cours on Friday as the car just got away from him.
While the lap was still good enough to give him his first pole of the season - and iSport's first of the campaign too - his delight was rather tempered by his off in the final complex, which ended with his car in the wall.
That incident brought out the red flags and he eventually took P1 on the grid by just 0.037 seconds - with Frenchman Romain Grosjean second.
"I'm obviously delighted to take pole, but that wasn't quite how I'd planned to do it," said Bruno. "The car was really well balanced today - perfect, in fact - but every time I tried to put a lap together I was delayed by traffic.
"When it came to my final run I just gave it everything I had and, unfortunately, the car got away from me at the final chicane. I lost a bit of time as I approached the line because I was fighting to regain control and had my foot on the brakes, but overall it was clearly a decent lap. It was my final chance to set a really good time and the incident was just one of those things.
"The impact didn't feel too heavy and I hope, for the team's sake, that I haven't done too much damage. The car felt absolutely fantastic and I'm in a perfect position to capitalise on that."
Senna's team-mate Karun Chandhok meanwhile was unable to get his car tailored to his liking and ended the day in 10th place. He will start eighth however as two other drivers' ahead of him picked up penalties [see separate story].
"I'm not sure what happened there. I'm disappointed and can't really put my finger on the problem," Karun added. "I just didn't feel hooked up and never had sufficient confidence in the car to attack the circuit in the way I'd have liked.
"We'll sit down and look at the data this evening, but this is a good team that always comes up with good answers, so I'm sure we'll be in better shape tomorrow."
