Romain Grosjean led the way in free practice for the latest round of the GP2 Series at Silverstone, the Frenchman making the most of having had some recent experience of the circuit.

Having completed several laps of the circuit in a Formula 1 car when Silverstone hosted the Renault World Series last month, Grosjean was straight back on it in GP2 machinery, topping the timesheets by a comfortable margin.

Making the most of weather conditions that cooled the circuit down, most of the best laps were achieved in the early stages of the session.

Grosjean was almost three tenths faster than Mike Conway, the former British Formula 3 champion returning to the scene of his only podium during his debut 2007 season with a good run to second fastest.

Fresh from his first points of the season, Luca Filippi was third best despite a spin, ahead of championship leader Giorgio Pantano in the Racing Engineering machine. Kamui Kobayashi was fifth quickest for DAMS, ahead of 2007 winner Andreas Zuber.

Andy Soucek showed he is settling into his surroundings at Super Nova well with seventh best, ahead of team-mate Alvaro Parente, Lucas di Grassi and Bruno Senna – all of which have raced at Silverstone through their past participation of the British Formula 3 Championship.

Elsewhere, Magny-Cours winner Sebastien Buemi was 12th fastest, while fellow regular frontrunners Vitaly Petrov, Pastor Maldonado and Javier Villa were 14th, 15th and 17th best respectively.

Meanwhile, series returnee Davide Valsecchi made a slow start to the weekend after missing the last two races, the Italian emerging 24th fastest.
