Marko Asmer joined the spinners' party by demolishing a hoarding on the outside of Chapel - with FMSI team-mate Roldan Rodriguez later adding a touch of symmetry by parking his car there with the chequered flag in sight - while Javier Villa lost his 100 per cent finishing record by stalling after a spin at Club on lap 22.
The Spaniard's rotation could have had implications for Senna, who was beginning to catch and lap backmarkers - including the Racing Engineering driver - by that point, but the Brazilian escaped and continued on his way to a consummate wet weather victory. He eventually came home over ten seconds clear of countryman di Grassi, with Pantano a further five seconds in arrears but safe from the threat of Conway.
Petrov survived a spin on the final lap to hold on to fifth place, but sixth changed hands within a couple of corners of the line as Kobayashi's bad luck struck again. The Japanese driver was minding his own business in traffic, safe in the knowledge that a point should be his, when Adrian Valles spun between Abbey and Bridge. With nowhere to go to avoid the BCN machine, Kobayashi was pitched off the track, only to be collected by the tailing Maldonado, ending all three's race on the spot.
That incident did, however, produce a small fairy tale, as Davide Valsecchi came through to claim the final point on his first weekend back from injury.
