Three years after they finished last in the GP2 Series standings, Barwa Campos International can now call themselves champions after wrapping up the 2008 Team title at Monza.

The peak of a massive trajectory for a team that was once considered a GP2 minnow, the combination of Vitaly Petrov and Lucas di Grassi (who replaced Ben Hanley from round four onwards) ensured that they snatched the title off iSport International.

di Grassi's arrival proved the catalyst for Campos' belated title charge, his wins in Hungary and Valencia hauling them past iSport before he claimed a crucial feature race victory at the season finale in Monza.

Even so, Petrov's contribution was vital too, the Russian driver finishing seventh overall after scoring consistently all season and also winning a race at Valencia.

Coming two years after Campos received a crucial amount of backing from Alejandro Agag, he admits the title has come sooner than they expected.

“We are all happy about having achieved the objective of GP2 Series team champions before we had expected. This historic feat of winning for Spanish motor racing the most competitive championship outside F1 is only possible with a good project and with the hard work and coordination from all departments within the team. A big thank you to everyone, starting with Adrián and including all those who have collaborated.”

With titles in the World Series by Nissan prior to GP2, Campos has established itself as a premier privateer team this season, much to the delight of team manager and former F1 driver Adrian Campos.

“I can only feel proud for what we have all achieved together and would like to show my gratitude to the whole set up, the drivers, the sponsors and all the people who have believed in the team and in me.”
