Roldan Rodriguez will return to the Piquet Sports team in 2009 for what will be his third season of GP2 Series racing.

The Spaniard made his debut for the team in 2007 when they were known as the Minardi Piquet team after finishing as runner-up in the 2006 Spanish Formula 3 Championship.

He will now return to the Italian-based Brazilian team for 2009 having spent the season competing with FMS International. Although it was a last-minute deal, Rodriguez performed admirably to finish 13th overall after decent point scoring outing at Monaco and Monza.

"For me it is a return home,” Rodriguez, who is set to race for the team in the Asia Series also, said. “I know the team and I know that together we can do really well in the upcoming sports season. Fortunately, I immediately begin the testing that I need to be able to cope better next season sports.

“I won't not hide my ambitions and I'll work for wins and podiums immediately testing at Paul Ricard and later in Shanghai, so I can arrive at the first race of the GP2 Asia Series in great shape.”

Piquet Sports returned to glory in 2008, the combination of Pastor Maldonado and Andreas Zuber lifting them to third place in the overall standings by the end of the season. It is success team boss Pagiaro Tancredi is keen to replicate with Rodriguez.

"I am really happy to be able to get Roldán with us after the season moved along in 2007," he said. "In fact the Spanish driver ran with us four races in 2008, Euroseries in 3000, winning at Vallelunga and Valencia. In this season the team has proved to be competitive in every race, so we can not hide our ambitions for wins, which is the same as Roldán's. But we know that certainly will not be easy, but we have already begun to work together to plan the best commitments in GP2 Asia Series and GP2 Main Series in 2009. "

The team has undergone several guises since 2005, beginning as Hitech Piquet, before reverting back to its original Piquet Sports moniker in 2006 for a season that almost saw Nelson Piquet Jr secure the title.
