This weekend both major sports car series are conducting events - American Le Mans Series on the new street course at Reliant Park in Texas for the Grand Prix of Houston on Friday night, and Grand American Rolex Series in Arizona for the Gainsco Grand Prix at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday night.
There are several drivers who are ‘doing the double’, racing in both events. There is one team, Alex Job Racing, which is running cars in each race. To the best of my knowledge, all drivers are flying commercial between the two states.
AJR has entered #23 Bell Micro/Hirewise Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in the GT2 class for ALMS in Texas with drivers MIKE ROCKENFELLER and KLAUS GRAFF. Rockenfeller is AJR's driver in Phoenix in #23 Ruby Tuesday Porsche Crawford in the
Daytona Prototype Class, with co-driver PATRICK LONG. Now here's where it starts to get complicated. Long is racing in Houston also, in #31 MMPIE/PAWS Porsche 911 GT3 RSR for Petersen Motorsports in the same GT2 Class, with co-drivers JORG BERGMEISTER and MICHAEL PETERSEN.
Bergmeister, currently leading the Grand-Am Rolex Series Daytona Prototype Drivers Championship standings is also racing in Phoenix in #76 Krohn Racing Ford Riley DP with co-driver COLIN BRAUN.
Bergmeister, Long and Rockenfeller are all going to run one practice session in Phoenix, fly to Houston to run the ALMS race and then fly back Saturday morning for Grand-Am's warm-up and race. They will have someone else qualify their ALMS and Grand-Am cars.
Other drivers doing double duty are: BILL AUBERLEN; OLIVIER BERETTA; GUY COSMO; WOLF HENZLER; and BUTCH LEITZINGER.
Auberlen is racing for
BMW Team PTG in #21 Yokohama BMW EA46 M3 in ALMS GT2, co-driving with JOEY HAND; and for Sigalsport BMW in #04 Motul/GRW.com BMW M3 in Grand-Am Rolex Series GT class, with co driver MATTHEW ALHADEFF and also for the PIR weekend, MATT PLUMB. Auberlen won't be coming to Phoenix until Saturday.
