The SAMAX Motorsport team will hope to go one better than in 2007 when the Rolex 24 at Daytona kicks off the Grand Am season after naming an impressive looking line-up for the round the clock race.
Former
F1 racer Allan McNish will be joined by fellow sportscar stars Mike Rockenfeller and Lucas Luhr and former Michael Shank Racing driver Henri Zogaib for the event as the team looks to build on the second place finish it enjoyed last term.
“I feel like I am part of a dream team with Allan, Mike, and Lucas joining this effort,” Zogaib said. “Peter has assembled a fantastic group of talent on both sides of the pit wall to support this car and I am very excited to have drivers of this calibre join me in this effort.
“We have a proven technical package in the Pontiac-Riley, great drivers, and a strong team behind us so we know we have the opportunity to do really well. I just want to win this thing,”
Rockenfeller is no stranger to Grand Am fans, taking fifth in the 2006 championship after starting the season co-driving with Luhr to the podium in the Rolex 24 at
Daytona. Luhr also has a long history in the Rolex 24, going back to a victorious GT class run in the event in 2001.
McNish, who enters the 2008 season as the defending American Le Mans Series Champion, has one victory in the race once already in his career and will be making his second Rolex 24 start in Daytona Prototype machinery..
"I am pleased to join SAMAX Motorsport for the Daytona 24 Hours, the team have proved their worth in Grand Am and especially at the 24 with a great second overall last year,” the Scot said. “This year we have a strong driver line up with my Audi team mates Lucas, Mike and myself joining Henry, the Riley Pontiac combination and strong technical staff, we all hope to be challenging for victory.
