The SunTrust Racing team is counting the cost of a 'catastrophic accident' involving its transporter following the latest round of the Grand Am Rolex Series campaign at Laguna Seca.
The transporter was returning to the team's base in Indianapolis when the incident occurred on Interstate 40 in Texas. Drivers Larry Harmon and Buddy Johnson heard a noise from the trailer while roughly an hour east of Amarillo and moved the transporter away from moving traffic before exiting the cab where they discovered the trailer was on fire.
Both drivers were uninjured and no other parties were involved, although the pair reported major damage to the tractor, trailer and its contents, which included equipment, spare parts and the #10 SunTrust Pontiac Dallara race car of Max Angelelli and Michael Valiante.
"First and foremost we're very thankful that everyone is okay," team owner Wayne Taylor said. "It was obviously a scary situation that our transporter drivers, Larry Harmon and Buddy Johnson, handled extremely well.
"We're still trying to gather all the facts as to what caused this catastrophic accident, but the most important thing is that no one was hurt."
