I respectfully disagree, Mark.... I think DF had the team very much behind him. Otherwise he would not have won either "The 500" or the championship.

Having said that, he IS a rookie in NASCAR, and I'm sure it's quite a big learning curve to go from light single-seaters to huge lumbering behemoths. Especially as most teams (with the exception of Gibbs) are still struggling to come to grips -- sometimes quite literally -- with the new car.

And yes, Hornish may be making more races, but he's not staying in them for very long.

This is what future F1 cars should look like. I''m getting a little sick of all teh extra things that the aero designers are sticking onto the cars now. Yes, they''re within the rules, but they''re ugly as all get out -- and isn''t F1 supposed to be glamourous?

Give me a Lotus 49 or Eagle Mk1 any day.

I couldn't agree more. It just isn't a proper series without the chrome horn.

I wholeheartedly agree. Somebody's gotta find PT a ride. It would be a shame not to see the chrome horn in action.

If I remember correctly, IMSA, which is the 'official' sanctioning body for ALMS, already runs the STAR Mazda pro series, which is very much like the FA championship.

The big question is, will whatever new IRL/CCWS series be successful enough and be a legitimate feeder series into F1 as has been successful for the likes of JPM, JV and now SeaBass? Or will it devolve into drivers saying 'oh well, I guess I'll go to NASCAR...'

Hopefully not the latter. It seems that sports car racing and the various touring car formats (WTCC, BTCC etc.) are also becoming legit series to go to.

That's just my two cents.

ALMS » BMW returns.
That has to be one of the most beautiful race cars I've seen in a while.

Congratulations to BMW, ALMS and Rahal-Letterman Racing.

Exactly, Jaymat. Run the Champ Car series as scheduled -- since many teams have bought new Panoz chassis for this year -- and also (for the CC teams) run as many Indy events as the schedule can accommodate.

All in all, however, it's about time.

I loved seeing Top Gear when it was rebroadcast on the Discovery Channel here in the US. I only hope that NBC is as successful with this as it was/is with their re-tooling of 'The Office.'

Everyone (including, dare I say, Jean Todt) seems to be missing the fact that this ECU contract was commissioned, approved and (I'm very sure) heavily scrutinised by the FIA. If there's a line of code in there that says 'if $team="mclaren" then #hp=#hp+100,' the entire contract would have been tossed out and awarded to someone else.

Yes, the contract probably should have been awarded to a neutral third party. But it wasn't. McLarensoft got it fair and square. The upshot of all this is every team will have the same ECU with the same programming.

....and what about the other teams that had started testing the new ECU before last season ended?

Clearly those teams have an advantage as well.

I'm still wondering why Ferrari hasn't been penalised at all for allowing their data to be leaked in the first place. Oh, that's right -- how many members of the WMSC are from Ferrari?
