Surtees: Alonso must move teams to win again.

Though Fernando Alonso insists Renault are ‘moving forward', fellow former Formula 1 World Champion John Surtees has insisted the Spaniard will not lift the laurels again in the top flight until he leaves the French outfit.

trouble is that Alonso is damaged goods after the mclaren saga and no top team would give him a job!!!!

I dont think that Alonso does need to move teams. I think he needs to regain the trust of the Renault employees that he turned his back on at the end of 2006. It seems as though everything has clicked back into place judging by their (his) recent improved pace

Yeah right of course... what a load of stupid comments... No top teams would want him??? and also to gain Renault's trusts??? I think Renault has been amongst the top teams and looks like they are more than glad to pay millions again for Alonso's service and agreed to his terms.... and with the results improving coincidentally or not other teams would be eyeing up his service next year. He is the only double champ on the grid and he is a realist. People may not like his ways but this is not a papularity contest... so get over it.

Actually Alfonz, you just turned it into a popularity contest with your love for Alonso. I didnt say anything out of place. The fact is, Alonso's Renault team of 2005 and 2006 must have been pretty pissed after this happened:

Alonso wins the 2005 and 2006 title.
Alonso goes behind Flavio's back and arranges a contract with Mclaren.

Basically, he was questioning if Renault could keep up with the pace, and he didnt think they could so he jumped ship to another team. I wouldnt be so keen to working with him if he basically gave me the finger and said so long.

Adrian, I am not an Alonso fan so you are wrong there. I dont have to be his fan to appreciate his qualities as a hard core / no BS no glammed up pussyfoot F1 driver. No many of those at the moment.

I am getting tired of so many writes here making out their assumptions as facts! Alonso went behind Flav's back? People know that how? Think they care if they get a few more millions? Think Renault did not make any counter offer? Dont forget we are talking about multi-million buisness deals and its up to the drivers/managers to make sure their drivers gets the best deals out there.

That is funny Alfonz because Briatore was his manager when he signed for McClaren. If Flav knew he was signing with McClaren or helped with the deal then he probably would not still be at Renault. It always did seem like a conflict of interest so perhaps it was a good thing for him to leave at that time. I think you are correct that is was not about the money (although your last sentence contradicts this). He knew that Renault were not going to be able to give a car capable of winning three in a row.

Yet again... managers makes money on deals and why wouldnt Flav stay with Renault especially if he ahd a good contract... theres contract between managers and drivers and contract between the team and manager.. I dont think they relate to one another and why should they? Also where did I say its not about hte money??? its ALL ABOUT the MONEY LOL...

Regarding drivers knowing team capable or not of delivering of winning or now thats also difficult to determine... I think Alonso knew he made the main difference in Renault and with a little luck he wone his last WDC, but Macca probably is more capable of making a more competitive car where gives him even more chance of winning the WDC.
