What is MotoGP?

The single tyre rule for 2009 has reignited the debate over what the MotoGP World Championship should stand for.

4 people agree.  28 people disagree.

MotoGP was fun
MotoGP is loosing identity
MotoGP will ...

I have an idea ... let's merge MotoGP and WSBK ... so the best team of the best is and will be the best.

It will be good for the sponsor, good for the fans, and extremely fun for the riders.

just my 2 cents ..

What is Motogp? A mess thanks to the change from 990s to 800s. This is what happens when the manufacturers control the rule book.

for me moto gp is just about hoping there is one hell of a good race, like what is in BSB and WSBK now, unfortunatley motogp dosent come near either of these championships now! i think its a good idea that it is a one tyre rule cos when u think about it its an awful lot of money to be spending on bikes and riders when it really only boils down to what i see is a tyre war first, then comes bike and rider compettition and can someone explain why the hell the throw in qualifiers, isnt qualifying meant to be in the interest of safety, to put the fast guys to the front and work back, sometimes with qualifers slow guys get popped up a row or two depending on how lucky u get with ur 3 or 4 laps

for me WSBK should not merge with MotoGP - 2 different stories! one for sure: the power of influence HRC should be decreased to the level which all the rest of the factories have. Only what WSBK can change is to propose third class 750cc between SBK i SSP and merge 1-2 race in one race the true is everybody want to watch a lot of motorcycle racing,
another thing is: motogp is about competition in technology, right? so it's about who is better. It's normal that everybody wants to have the best package and Michelin couldn't deliver theirs goods. Dunlop too couldn't deliver good quality and has gone, the same story goes to French factory. If you're weak second season so far you need to leave

A formula which has lost its way and is slowly being overshadowed by its Superbike cousin......

If you go back to the beginning of GP racing, the situation was much different as the pukka factory machines were either not available to the general public or available on a limited bases (read Manx and 7R). Road machines were hopelessly outclassed. Now the current road bikes are not that much slower than a GP machine and little different in configuration. The WSBK machine is based on road bikes. For all the huge sums spent on development, the average fan can't really see much different. So the brand or the rider is what is of interest. Speeds are too fast already so more powerful GP machines are not the answer. Blame it on the Japanese and their cheap fast rode bikes.

I believe that the organisers of any particular class (F1, MotoGP, Sbk etc) should have 1 motive (excluding safety) when putting rules & regs in to improve the class. The motive should be to create a "true" playing field whereby the viewer/fan can make an accurate assesment of rider ability, bike/car performance & suitability to the particular track etc. I think the problem the organisers are having at the moment is that they are desperate to create a good "show", to help keep public interest, sponsership etc, yet maintain a high level of technology in the sport. Unfourtunately with the level of technology now available to the teams the only way to keep the "show" so that the viewer can...

...see some rider input rather than 20 computer controled rockets all in a train (F1 style), is to effectively disadvantage the bikes/cars. I think that doing this removes some of the uniqueness of the designs of the bikes, yet the areas for development that are allowed to be different (ie valve systems, ecu's, etc) can play into particular manufacturers hands. The result is confusion to the viewer as you never truly know who or what is making the difference that results in good performances, the rider? Or the bike? Because of this i believe that the ? of having a great racing riders/driver championship yet still keeping the accolaid of being the the ultimate in motorsport technology are...

...exclusive. The organisers need to come to a decision, do they want a fantastic riders championship (in which case they will have to regulate the rules so that everybody has the same level of performance etc, reducing the manufacturers interest)? Or do they want the ultimate in technology (In which case allow the factories free-reign over their computers, tyres, aero-dynamics, ABS etc etc. But accept the fact that rider imput may become a less important factor)?

Who wrote this article anyway???
is he a motogp fan?

Is this article because motogp is becoming single tyre next season??
isn't F1 already a single tyre competition??
didn't it improve a lot after that? (last season the champion was decided in the last race)
didn't they chose the single tyre rule for the same reasons motogp is changing??
of course motogp is about bike development and having the best riders and bikes, but if the champion is decided but the tyre he has is the champion the best rider?

lets no **** dorna's head over this anymore...

motogp should allow all kinds of engines without weight or cilinder capacity limitations/penalties.

For the spectacle, they should remove the TC and wheelie control so people can start enjoying nicky's riding style for example.

CMON motogp, wake up and let brutalness back into the game!!!!!!!!

MotoGP got into trouble when they started naming it MotoGP, when the tv rights became the steering mechanism instead of love for the sport. It was a fun day out with the whole range from 50cc all the way up to 750's and sidecars, something for everyone.
Now it has to be pressed into a one hour television 'format' (the word already makes me sick) and compete with other motorized championships, spectator numbers ruling all.
The change to fourstrokes, the 250's replaced by 600's, all is done to try and crush WSBK and it all fails.
So stop trying Dorna, put all that energy into creating a full grid for a change!

MotoGP (and F1) should have only two rules...

1 A fixed race distance.

2 A fixed fuel allowance.

Only then will true, worthwhile innovation happen and create the most efficient engines.

Like the article suggests, at the moment it is merely a promotional exercise for the manufacurers.

As thud87 said, it's either a level playing field, riders championship (almost superstock really!), or an ultimate bike technology championship were the riders merely point the bikes in the right direction (f1 style). Theres no doubt the riders championship is better for racing, and the other the best to show off manufacturers talents. It can't be both. Dorna need to decide which way to go.

@Jose Dimas

I don't think F1 is single tyres. Bridgrstone are the sole supplier at the moment, but I don't think it's in the rules that only one company can supply tyres.

MotoGP is loosing it's way a bit it seems. It needs to watch it doesnt go the same way as F1 and disappear up it's own backside. The field is a little lacking over the past couple of years. The move the move to 800cc seems to have killed a lot of racing.

Next yeah the World Supers looks to have much more potential to provide a closer more exciting championship than MotoGP does.

Why is it that everyone complains about the races not being close. Then when the rules are changed to try and make them closer people complain.

At the end of the day if it was a free for all, the manufacturer with the most money and development would win every race. Where is the entertainment in that.

To me the single tyre rule can only help the entertainment factor in motogp. Everyone will have the same basic grip levels and it will be down to the rider to get the best out of them.

Anyone riding michelins this year as only had a competitive package for half the season the rest of the season it wasn't even worth turning up.

Darryl you're wrong. Even taking into account michelin's 3 terrible races (Sachsenring, Laguna Seca, and Brno) and even taking into account that there's more bridgestone riders than michelins, one could argue that michelin did a lot better than people think. The problem is we've got two unbelievably talented riders in the championship: Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner. remove those two guys and the racing becomes very close.

seriously, think of all the races this year and without those two guys you'd have more than WSBK style racing. you remove those two riders from the results this year and you'd be amazed at how close the racing was and how well michelin did overall...
