Tony Kanaan finally gave Andretti-Green Racing something to smile about this year as he claimed both his and the teams' first win of the 2006 IRL IndyCar Series season at the famous Milwaukee Mile on Sunday.
Kanaan won the ABC Supply Co/AJ Foyt Indy 225 by nearly two seconds over championship leader Sam Hornish Jr to salvage at least one glimmer of light from a dark season for the previously all-conquering outfit.
Second place for Hornish helped pad his points lead considerably as each of the four drivers immediately below him in the standings at the start of the day either failed to finish or finished well down the order.
Target Chip Ganassi teammates Dan Wheldon and Scott Dixon both missed the boat in terms of set-up and finished eighth and tenth respectively while Hornish's Marlboro Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves lost some 30 laps after contact with Ed Carpenter damaged his suspension to leave him 14th.
As a result Hornish Jr now holds a 25-point lead over Dixon with Castroneves 30 points back and Wheldon 32 behind. Kanaan moves into a tie for fourth place with Vitor Meira, who crashed out on lap 136, 79 points behind Hornish.
Tomas Scheckter, Danica Patrick and rookie Marco Andretti rounded out the top five with defending Milwaukee winner Dario Franchitti sixth.
