Among those lower down the order than expected was 2005 race winner Dan Wheldon, who managed only 13th spot on the speed charts, immediately behind Marco Andretti and fellow Briton Darren Manning.
"We didn't have the best Carburetion Day that we've ever had, so we're just going to go back and look at the numbers and see if we can just fine-tune it for Race Day," Wheldon admitted, "You just need to do a systems check and make sure everything is okay from that standpoint. You can't really make substantial changes from this point on, it's just a matter of fine-tuning what you've got. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what we would have liked."
1969 Indianapolis 500 winner
Mario Andretti was an interested observer on Carb Day, watching his son, grandson and nephew going through their final preparations.
"My wish list?" the veteran smiled when asked, "Michael would win, Marco would get second, and John would finish third. All I can see is that all five of the AGR cars are quite happy here. I'm listening to the comments from most of the drivers, and all of them are doing very well. They have done their work. We don't know how the conditions will fare out on Race Day, but I think the cars are better on paper this year than they were last year. We will see how it goes."
Mario's brother, Aldo, also offered comments on the family involvement after seeing son John make the field alongside Michael and Marco.
"I'm overwhelmed," he admitted, "It was not as much planning for this this year. It all happened, and I'm really ecstatic that everything is working out as well as it is. I keep repeating myself when I say that 'John, you have a hill to climb in three days', but he's looking good. He's very happy with the car. So I'm very happy, obviously."
