Target Chip Ganassi Racing team-mates Dan Wheldon and Scott Dixon paced the final practice session before Sunday's 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500, but the weather was once again the real winner at the Brickyard.
The practice session, which had been scheduled for a full hour to give the 33 qualifiers one last attempt to fettle their cars in race set-up, was limited to just twelve minutes due to the return of the rain which plagued the event build-up throughout in the month.
“It is only fitting that it rains today, since it's been dry all week," Marco Andretti said, ironically, "But the Indiana Jones/Blockbuster team is satisfied enough that we don't need much more on-track time. We got up to speed today, which is all we needed to do at Carb Day. We were able to shake things down, and there was no big balance change, so things are good.”
Wheldon, who will start second in Sunday's race, turned a fastest lap of 223.934mph to turn the tables on polewinner Dixon, who lapped in 223.028mph, as both drivers completed a paltry six laps before light rain began falling.
“My theory around here is that, if you don't know it by Carb Day, you're never going to have it," an apparently unperturbed Wheldon commented, "although you can certainly fine-tune it in the race with all of the pit-stops you have.
"It's really disappointing for the fans though because there seemed to be an awful lot of traffic coming in - I almost missed the drivers' meeting."
Dixon, meanwhile, viewed the traditional 'warm-up' as something to get over and done with, as he kept his focus purely on the race.
