Following another near miss at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Marco Andretti moved quickly to put his third place at the Brickyard behind him as he laid claim to becoming the youngest polewinner in series history on Saturday at the Milwaukee Mile.
In a session utilising the traditional Indianapolis style four-lap average qualification run the 21 year-old Andretti-Green Racing driver posted four consecutive laps around the venerable one-mile flat oval under 22-seconds to finish his run with an average speed of 168.079mph. That speed was more than half an ‘mph' quicker than his nearest rival and ensured that the Peak Motor Oil pole award was his.
Starting alongside Andretti will be the driver who earlier this year broke Andretti's own record for being the youngest winner in series history, 19 year-old Graham Rahal. After having his Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing Dallara hastily repaired following his Indianapolis shunt Rahal gave another glimpse of his raw talent with a four-lap qualifying average speed of 167.654mph.
Newly crowned Indy 500 champion Scott Dixon will start third in the leading Chip Ganassi Racing entry and will be well poised to take advantage of any youthful over exuberance from the front row starters. However with another series rookie, Australian Will Power starting alongside Dixon, the crafty Kiwi will have to count on all his years of Indycar experience to keep him out of trouble in the early stages of Sunday's 225-lap ABC Supply/AJ Foyt 225.
Penske Racing's Helio Castroneves and AGR's Tony Kanaan will share row three of the grid with Dixon's teammate Dan Wheldon and Conquest Racing's rookie Enrique Bernoldi on row four.
Oriol Servia and Ernesto (EJ) Viso complete the top ten with Ryan Briscoe eleventh in the second Penske entry and due to start directly ahead of his new arch enemy, Danica Patrick, who qualified 13th.
