Justin Wilson suffered a scary moment during round seven of his inaugural IndyCar Series campaign when he struggled to stop his damaged McDonalds-backed Newman/Haas/Lanigan racing entry at Texas Motor Speedway.
The Briton had been handily placed in the middle of the pack after making up early places in Bombardier Learjet 550k - his first visit to the high-speed, high-banked TMS tri-oval - but saw his race come to an abrupt, and rather hair-raising, end when he brushed the wall on lap 39. The impact damaged his front-right suspension and former Champ Car frontrunner Wilson was left with little means of slowing the scarlet machine.
"Something happened up the road and Buddy [Rice] had to check up, so I lifted off the throttle at the exit of turn one and went all the way through two with no throttle," he reported, "But I just couldn't get it stopped. I just ran out of road and brushed the outside wall of turn two. The car went a long way with no throttle and I just couldn't get it stopped."
Prior to the incident, Wilson had been happy with the way the #02 car had been performing and was looking to add to a points tally hit by various retirements in the opening few rounds.
“I think the McDonald's car was pretty quick and I was pleased with the progress we were making,” he said, “It felt like the car was sliding around a lot - it was difficult to hang on to - but we were able to move forward. I had just started to settle down and I was happy to sit there and let the race unfold.
