Briscoe had made it through to the final phase by just 0.06secs, at the expense of Bruno Junqueira, the Brazilian finding himself pushed out of the top six by a late improvement from Servia that lifted the Catalan into the top six with just seconds to spare. Briscoe, too, was on the verge of missing the cut, but also produced a time when it mattered, ensuring that Rexall-backed Graham Rahal would also miss the Fast Six session.
Tracy, meanwhile, missed out first time around, but not for want of pace or trying. The Canadian ran inside the top six of his split-group session until just after mid-distance, but had to call on all his experience of the Edmonton circuit as he retook the track with just over a minute remaining. His final lap was good enough to get the Subway-backed car into the top six but, when it was revealed that the veteran had taken the chequered flag on successive laps, he lost his time and dropped to eighth.
Power, Mario Moraes, Dan Wheldon, Kanaan and Rahal had headed Tracy in session, with Enrique Bernoldi pipping Marco Andretti to take the Canadian's place. Only Power would make it through to the Fast Six from group two, with Junqueira being the odd man out from group one. Moraes would go on to blot his otehrwise impressive copybook by back hard into the tyre wall in the twelve-man second stage, repeating an incident suffered by Watkins Glen winner Ryan Hunter-Reay as he pursued an escape from the first round of qualifying.
