Robby Gordon refused to rule out another attempt at the Indy 500/Coke 600 double after rain at The Brickyard scuppered his 2004 marathon bid.

The Memorial Day weekend was a bit of a damp squib as a whole for Gordon, his Team Gordon IRL IndyCar Series team and Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Nextel Cup squad.

After rain on lap 29 of the Indy 500 meant the versatile Californian had to hand over the controls of his No.70 Meijer sponsored Dallara-Chevrolet to Jaques Lazier for the restart, Gordon went on to struggle in the Coca Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway later on Sunday evening.

"We had a good race car,” said Gordon of his IRL ride. “We started out and hung with the leaders for a while but then we went back to like 16th at one pit stop. I was kinda hoping it would rain all day there. If it would rained there a lot more, we would have been a lot better off.”

However while Lazier was strapping into the cockpit of the No.70 machine ready to take the restart, Gordon was on a plane heading for Charlotte, where he remained unaware of the final fate of his IRL team until after he finished a disappointing 20th, three laps behind winner Jimmie Johnson in the longest race of the NASCAR season.

While Gordon was toiling with the handling of his No.31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet in Charlotte, Lazier was quickly getting to grips with a car he had not even sat in prior to lap 30 of the race!

However after just 88 laps a mechanical issue with the car sidelined Lazier, who had already fallen off the lead lap as a result of having to take the restart at the back of the field and the car was classified 29th.

“I am disappointed that Jaques couldn't stay on the lead lap,” said Gordon, who started from the outside of row six at Indy. “I am not sure what happened to car. I haven't talked to those guys; they were racing when we were getting ready to start the race here.
