Neil Cunningham: Turning the corner?

Friday, 29th June 2007

In his latest Crash.net column, Embassy Racing’s Neil Cunningham looks ahead to the third round of the Le Mans Series at the Nurburgring.

After the late decision not to run the Pilbeam, it hasn’t been the easiest start to life with the Radical this season.

We had problems at Monza and then had more problems in Valencia, when we had a battery go down of all things. Since then though, we have completed a successful six hour test at Rockingham and the car ran faultlessly so hopefully now we have got over the problems we have had in the first two races of the year.

It was a late decision to go with the Radical rather than the Pilbeam, which we all knew and were aware of, but the Radical is such a good car to drive, it’s just a shame that we only got it five days before the first race! If we’d had a few weeks more then we would have been in a stronger position, but then again, if you have a problem, you have a problem – and our crank broke in Italy. Valencia was a very tight circuit for the Le Mans Series and almost felt like a kart track in the infield, it was so busy and you were always passing slower cars and having the quicker LMP1 cars coming past. You had to keep your eyes open and be aware of what was around you. I think the circuit is a little bit too small really for the series, you really need bigger circuits like the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit or the Nurburgring – places that are big and open as at the end of the day, these cars are designed to go quickly!
