Neil Cunningham: Turning the corner?

Friday, 29th June 2007

In his latest Crash.net column, Embassy Racing’s Neil Cunningham looks ahead to the third round of the Le Mans Series at the Nurburgring.

The test at Rockingham was to give us the chance to have a bit of a shakedown and get six hours of running under our belt. We wanted to try and iron out the problems that we have had so far, which have all stemmed from getting the car so late. We could have run for longer if we’d been able to, but the circuit was closing so we had no choice but to stop! Warren already knows these cars and has done a lot of work on prototypes so he has done a lot of the running so far. I got the chance to spend more time in the car at Rockingham and, as I’ve said in the past, the hardest thing with these cars is getting into the comfort zone, especially in the braking area. In other respects it is just another racing car, but we need to be in that comfort zone to be safe.

I love the Radical and driving it makes me wish I had gone to prototypes earlier. They are proper racing cars and the downforce and braking is unbelievable. The gear changing is superb and in a way they are an easy car to drive slowly, but not to drive fast – because of the G-Force you encounter under braking. But they are very exciting cars to drive.

One race we decided to miss this season was Le Mans, although I watched it on Motors TV and enjoyed the coverage a lot. It looked like a hell of a weekend with the weather, but that kind of thing makes it more exciting and enjoyable. Next year I want to be back there and be in a position to fight for a podium. I enjoy the wet as it’s a real equaliser and I think these cars are easier to drive in the wet – although some people who took part in the race probably won’t agree with me! If I remember rightly, only two cars finished the race in our class which is unbelievable – and it quite bad in a way. But that is what Le Mans is like and it always throws up a lot of unknowns.
