Barragan wins, Ramon takes title lead.

Monday, 4th August 2008

Jonathan Barragan wins Grand Prix of Belgium, Steve Ramon takes MX1 title lead.

Jonathan Barragan took his third consecutive MX1 GP win courtesy of an incredible performance in the deep Lommel sand, during Sundays' Grand Prix of Belgium, while Estonian Gert Krestinov wrapped up his maiden MX2 GP win one day after his 18th birthday.

Barragan's victory was his fourth of the season and continues an incredible run by the AXO KTM Silver Action rider. Barragan won the final moto at Lommel having finished second in race one, where Martin Honda’s Marc de Reuver put together a fantastic performance to take the moto victory.

The second moto was tougher for the Dutchman, who crashed while leading, handing the advantage to Barragan and Max Nagl of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

The latter was a solid third on the podium right behind Teka Suzuki WMX1’s Ken de Dycker.

de Reuver and team-mate Steve Ramon rounded out the top five, with reigning champion Ramon also taking the 2008 world championship lead from David Philippaerts, who managed only tenth overall.

Team-mate Josh Coppins overcame a bout of 'flu to finish fifth and eighth.

In the world championship standings, Ramon is now two points ahead of Philippaerts with Coppins a further 15 points behind.

In MX2, Krestinov of Favor KTM Motorsport was rewarded with his maiden GP victory after 8-1 race finishes.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Rui Goncalves mounted the second step of the podium for the first time in his career, after finishing level in points with the Estonian, while championship contender Tommy Searle was third overall despite three crashes in the final moto.

Title leading team-mate Tyla Rattray, who also crashed in the final heat, was fourth despite winning the first moto. Rattray is now on top of the MX2 Championship by 20 points over Searle.

Meanwhile, the final round of the Veterans’ World Cup saw Toine van Dijk take the overall event win, but the title went to home rider Peter Iven, third on the Lommel podium behind Jan Blancquaert. Defending champion Dave Thorpe slipped to slip in the final standings after also finishing third in the event.
