Ricky Carmichael is halfway to repeating his perfect 2002 AMA Motocross season after taking his sixth consecutive victory of the season at Unadilla on Sunday.
Honda rider Carmichael easily won both motos, at a circuit in which his previous win steak came to an end one year ago.
“It’s no secret that this track is not one of my favourites,” said Carmichael. “I got beat here last year and my goal was to not let that happen again.”
When asked about the possibility of turning in another perfect season Carmichael sloughed it off. “I don’t want to think about that,” he said. “It’s too much pressure.”
Australian Chad Reed claimed second overall for Yamaha with 2-3 finishes while Frenchman Sebastien Tortelli completed the podium after taking 3-4 results in only his second race back from injury.
“This place kicked my butt last year, so I’d say I’m happy to get out of here with a decent result,” stated Supercross champ Reed.
“I’m feeling better every weekend,” added Suzuki run Tortelli. “I hope to continue improving.”
Meanwhile Kevin Windham, the man who ended Carmichael’s streak a year ago, was left fourth overall after claiming just sixth in race one. K-Dub made amends with second behind RC in race two, but lost more points on second in the championship Reed.
In the 125cc class, James ‘Bubba’ Stewart proved that his Red Bud race two DNF, which ended his own perfect streak, was just a blip in form as he won both motos on his way to the overall.
“It feels good to be back up here,” admitted the Kawasaki rider. “I actually got pretty decent start in the second moto today so it wasn’t bad.”
Fellow Kawasaki rider Matt Walker claimed his first podium of the year with 3-2 finishes, while Yamaha of Troy’s Kelly Smith also mounted the podium for the first time this season after finishing 6-5.
Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps finished second to Stewart in race one, but managed just 19th in moto 2 after mechanical problems.
The series moves to Troy, Ohio next Sunday.
