Carmichael's perfect season decider this weekend.

Thursday, 9th September 2004

Ricky Carmichael, fresh from clinching his fifth straight AMA 250 Motocross title last Sunday at Steele city, will attempt to complete his second undefeated season when the 2004 AMA Motocross Championship concludes on September 12, at Glen Helen Raceway Park in San Bernardino, California.

Carmichael is now just two motos away from completing another perfect season – a feat many thought nearly impossible until the Honda hero accomplished it in 2002. But unlike two years ago, when the pressure was intense as he was closing in on his first undefeated season, this time around Carmichael claims he feels little anxiety.

"No one thought the perfect season could be done before," said the 24-year-old, who now has a record total of 11 AMA National Championships to his credit. "Even I didn't think it was possible back then. Now we know it is possible, but since I've done it already I'm not as worried about this time around.

"It would be nice to do it again though, no doubt," he quickly added.

Carmichael will be going for his fourth 250 win on the challenging Glen Helen circuit, which features two of the steepest hills in the series. He also won the 125 race at Glen Helen a record three times.

But while RC is hoping to stay perfect, his rivals Chad Reed and Kevin Windham are taking the battle for runner-up in the 250 series down to the wire. A crash at Steel City kept Reed off the podium for only the second time this year and allowed Windham to draw within 6 points with two motos remaining.

Glen Helen fans will also get to see the factory KTM debut of Mike Alessi in the 250 class. The much talked about rookie earned a podium finish at Steel City in only his second AMA Motocross Championship event and will be looking to do it again this Sunday.
