Stefan Everts led an L&M Yamaha one-two in the premier MX1 Motocross World Championship class at Namur today; the reigning world champion extending his 2005 advantage after taking overall victory ahead of team-mate Brian Jorgensen at the famous citadel circuit, which was at its unforgiving best after further overnight rain.
Everts clinched his latest Namur success despite a mistake in the first heat, where he fought back from eighth to second behind Jorgensen, and then made sure of the overall by taking victory in moto two.
"I’m so happy when I think of the first moto I did, with the passing in the downhill, on each lap," said Stefan, who passed rider-after-rider at the top of the steep descent that leads out of the woods. "As soon as I figured out where I could do it, then I knew that I would overtake all the riders there; it’s a great feeling and that was even better than winning the overall!
"I tried so hard at the beginning of the race to make ground, I made some mistakes and then I found this spot to catch everybody except Jorgensen," he continued. "In the second race I managed to start in second and then immediately passed Brian to lead, and finally win for the 7th time in a row here. I equalled Roger De Coster’s record and I took my 82nd GP win; that’s a great day for me and I feel even better than a year ago."
Jorgensen was just fifth in the second outing, but it was enough to hand him second overall ahead of reigning MX2 world champion Ben Townley. The young New Zealander was a lowly seventh in heat one, but came out fighting for the final race – pushing Everts right to the flag.
Meanwhile, pole sitter Mickael Pichon fluffed both his starts and claimed two fourth placed finishes, dropping him to 27-points behind Everts in the title chase, while young Belgian Marvin Van Daele collected his first ever podium with a third place in the first heat.
