Preview – Spanish Grand Prix.

Tuesday, 20th March 2007

The European MotoGP season kicks off in dramatic style with this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, where 250,000 fans are expected to make their annual pilgrimage to the electric atmosphere of Jerez.

However he can expect a rough ride from the likes of Alex de Angelis, Hector Barbara, the impressive Thomas Luthi - who was fourth in Qatar on his 250cc debut - and Andrea Dovizioso. Reigning 125cc world champion Alvaro Bautista and runner-up Mika Kallio will hope to open their accounts after failing to score on their 250cc debuts in Qatar. A dark horse on Sunday for a podium finish could be Italian Marco Simoncelli riding the Metis Gilera. He won the 125cc race at Jerez in 2004 and 2005.

The 125cc class is wide open following the departure of Bautsia, Kallio and Luthi but Hector Faubel laid his cards on the table with a dramatic finish-line victory over new Bancaja Aspar Aprilia team-mate Gabor Talmacsi in Qatar.

But watch out for Spanish youngsters Pol Espargaro and Esteve Rabat who will want to consolidate in impressive Qatar performances in front of the vast patriotic crowd on Sunday.
