From there we made our way to Monterey Hospital. After checking in and filling out whatever “don’t sue us” forms needed to be filled out we had a long 5 hour wait before there was a free bed at about 10pm. The doctor took one look at my arm and said “Ooooh, that’s a pretty bad infection maaan!” The first thing they did was took the stitching out. It was pretty thick stuff and the doctor said “Man, what is this European stuff, fishing wire?! They then cleaned the would which was not pleasant.
He was pouring cleaning solution into it and then digging right in there with his fingers, apparently it was pretty dirty. They injected some local aesthetic into me so that they could properly clean it and also put me out of my misery! Next up was an injection of antibiotics in the ass, also not pleasant. About 10 seconds after that had been done another doctor came in and said that I wasn’t supposed to have that, great!
After a bit of waiting around, they then put me on a drip of antibiotics which ran for an hour so I tried to get some sleep. When that was done they re-dressed the elbow, gave me two types of antibiotic pills as a course and I was good to go, for 6 hours. They wanted me back again at 7am to check that everything had started to work as it should and fight the infection.
After getting to sleep it definitely didn’t feel long enough until my alarm was blaring out at 6:30am. I was feeling pretty dozy which didn’t really change all day. In the hospital they clarified that everything had started to work as it should. There was quite a lot of waiting around in the hospital that morning which meant that it was cutting it fine for when I was supposed to be out on track at 9:30am.
After getting out of there we went to the track and by the time I was in my leathers it was time to get on the bike. It was a tough day. I felt like crap in myself and on the bike but just wanted to get qualified and in as decent of a position as possible to give myself a chance if I did feel OK on Sunday.
