EXCLUSIVE: Toseland's MotoGP strategy

James Toseland's manager Roger Burnett details the double World Superbike champion's approach and expectations heading into his MotoGP race debut at this weekend's Qatar Grand Prix.

Good strategy. It's long been said that "to finish first, you must first finish".
Mr. Burnett seems to think the same thing. That's an attitude I can easily appreciate.

Yorkie - Re-read what Burnett said. He is not making excuses. He is making an honest assessment of what we can expect from JT in his first ever MotoGP race on a none factory bike. I for one won't mind if he finishes last, just so long that at each subsequent race he gets faster and further up the field. If he does become more competitive as the season progresses maybe his reward will be a factory machine. Then and only then can we realistically think about podiums. Don't expect too much, remember that MotoGP has a history of Superbike riders that either could not adapt or did not have the talent to make it in MotoGP.

Not only making excuses, but now alongside 800cc, traction control, wheelie control, tires....we have to worry about fuel economy. What an exciting sport!

It's not excuses Yorkie it's being realistic and managing expectations, which judging by your response here was cleary required.

Toseland has been brought up on Superbikes, not GP bikes. So he needs time to learsn and adapt much more than someone who came through the 125's and 250's.

Plus he is on a older bike for satellite team. Testing isn't racing, I think toseland has a bright future in GP's but you didn't seriously expect him to be fighting for podiums in his first race?

These days I riders/drivers worst enemy appears to be there fans and media sometimes who put unrealistic expectations and/or insane pressure on them.

I don't know, i've got this funny feeling that hes going to win first time out as a rookie, but i won't be disapointed as long as he finishes in the top ten.

It's like the old boxing saying goes - "Everybody has a plan until they get hit" - I think we've heard everybody's plan over the last couple of weeks so it will be interesting to actually see what comes them

I used to know a Hospital Ward Sister who told me 'When a relative asks how 'their' patient is I keep it basically accurate but always spin it toward the pessimistic side. If you're a fraction too optimistic and it doesn't come out that way people are really disappointed and upset and grumble you're useless. If you're pessimistic, when it comes out better they say either its great good luck or we're miracle workers'.

I wonder where Mr Burnett met her ;-)

If Toseland can beat Bayliss then he can mix it up with these guys. Bayliss taught him well.

Perhaps Burnett has learnt to be cautious from that other rider that he manages - does anyone else remember Neil Hodgsons 3 year plan? Good luck Neil in the Daytona 200 - he was fastest in qualifying. Good luck JT - it's been a long time since we had a rider with so much potential in the top class. A win first time out - I don't think so, I can only remember Max Biaggi and the great Jarno Saarinen doing that.

Hmmm seems to me we're getting a bit over excited here, Like he said testing isnt racing, look at Biaggi in WSBK last week 16th on the grid up to 2nd in 2 or 3 laps? Makes no odds, I think if Jim gets a top 10 we'll be lucky, I dont doubt his talent at all far from it, but I think being reasonable and level headed its the very most we can expect from a year old satellite bike and a MGP rookie. Top 5's towards the end of the season on the pneumatic valve engine maybe a podium at donington (We all know how he performs at home) but we can't keep putting the pressure on him like we are.

GOOD LUCK JIM!!

dannymagic... I don't think any of us Brits are putting any pressure on JT, I just think I'm not alone at being surprised at how well he has done in testing... I reckoned top 10 at best... But to be in the top 5 regularly in testing has opened a few of our eyes... Am sure everyone wishes him well... Tomorrow evening and the next few evenings is gonna be phone-off-the-hook and a few cans time!

Good luck to james,i think he will be a back marker for most of the season as you poms are putting so much pressure on him that he will lose his nerve and bin it this season and he is nowhere as good as bayliss!
