Toseland 'backs up' the hype.

Toseland 'backs up' the hype.

Just one week after claiming second place in the floodlit IRTA test, the Yamaha Tech 3 rider managed to find 1.1secs between the two sessions to conclude day one of MotoGP's first ever night event as the fastest satellite rider, having lapped 0.359secs behind factory Yamaha rookie Jorge Lorenzo and 0.370s from reigning world champion Casey Stoner.

The Tech-3 Yamaha is currently 10mph slower than Melandri's DUCATI on the straight.

Poor Colin and James, they will be furious no doubt.

Have been really impressed by Toseland. After a career on bikes quite a bit different to GP's he is adapting well. Go on James!

blah blah james!!!!!

What planet are you on saying that! James has done very well & is faster than a lot of very experienced riders on a bike that is not the fastest in a straight line.

OK it is just Q1 & we will see what the rest of the weekend brings, but it's a great start, so if you don't have anything constructive to say then don't bother going to the effort of typing.

I could lower myself to swearing at you but most people reading your comment are probably thinking it anyway.

Did anyone hear James say he is lapping 4 seconds faster on the motogp bike than his superbike. Unbelievable with 200cc less and not really alot more power. These prototypes are animals!!

Go James!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just hope all the Yamaha riders can maintain their qualifying pace then translate it into the race, Jorge has no fear, I am sure that Casey did not expect pressure from him so soon. James has been amazing on the valve spring 2007 spec engine, I am sure there are a few raised eyebrows over at Honda, having let him slip from their grasp and now see him become a protagonist. Colin seems to be having fun, now that the pressure of being on a full works bike is off of him. I just want Yamaha to have the minerals to give James and Colin the pneumatic-valve engines at Jerez, they are hampered by the low top speed of the old engine. Hopefully Vale is just finding his feet on the Bridgestones

Great to have a brit to support again in the MotoGP class. James is doing a fantastic job on the older, lesser powered yamaha engine. The boys got talent! Hope he gets better with every race, which i know he will as he is a very down to earth kind of guy. It'll make going to Donington all the more exciting.

Two things could affect JT & Colin E's chances - Roger Burnett commented a couple of days ago they need to keep their spring valve motor's wound off to conserve fuel, and my suspicion they're going to be tempted to burn out their tyres on other sections trying to offset lack of top speed down the 1Km+ straight.
I really hope it ain't so and I'd be chuffed to see 'em on the podium, but with those problems anything above 8th will be superb and top 10 won't be shodddy.

I wasn't a JT fan in WSBK, but i'm mightly impressed so far with how quickly he has taken to the Yamaha, although without "full" factory support, the bike was designed around Mitchelin tyres and it sorta speaks for itself with the first free practice results. Poor Rossi thought that bridgestone were the tyres to be on but again the Dukes have a few years on the Yams with development on this tyre.

I actually want JT to get a podium but if he is on the last corner on the last lap with a factory duke on his rear tyre im afraid that thing won't even need a slipstream to get past him to the chequered flag. If its close at the finish with 1st place in sight,I wont blame him for being annoyed!

Doesnt surprise me at all. The 08 Yamaha seems to be a missile,, they ve gained 11kph in the qatar straight compared to the 07 bike ...
JT is a world champ and a hell of a rider. And these moto gp bikes are easy to ride for guys this talented. Lok at Lorenzo, Dovi, JT, Pedrosa won races in his first year too ... That never happened with the 2strokers ...
