Casey Stoner will start the defence of the MotoGP World Championship from fourth on the grid in Sunday's season-opening Qatar Grand Prix night race, after Yamaha and Michelin swept the top three positions in qualifying.
Indeed, qualifying is one thing the race another, especially in these wierd circumstances. Poor Marco. Just goes to show that that ducati is a handfull. Marco is FAST when he has a set up. All the more reason to respect stoners achievements. I think it will be the wise heads that will prevail in the race; rossi & stoner as conditions change. Lets see where things stand after the warm up.

Sound like Marco's best option is to take it easy and scrape together any points he can. No point binning it and with his set up so far off that's the most likley outcome if he pushes it. Shame really. He's a bit inconsistent but he can be very good. Not this time tho.
Melandri is about 2 sec's of the pace on race trim. the only time he was in the very high 1.56 was on QL tire. if the leaders do low 1.56 they will lap 1.5/2 sec' faster then him. poor boy... signing on the best team/bike and starting the season like this. hopes it gets better for him in the future. he's a nice little guy. ;)

4 meter rabbit- Well put, totally agree. Marco is in clear agony. The fact is that it was his choice though, Gresini wanted him in his team...
Rossi focused on race pace even in qualifying. He never even put on a qualifying tire. His qualifying time came on race tires. I guess he new that Bridgestone had no chance in qualifying and not to waste precious time with a tire that couldn't benefit him in the race. Casey also only put one on for only on lap and ran the last 4 laps on a race tire. His qualifying time came from a qualifier however.

George
You also posted this on the Toseland article so I ask again where did you get that information regarding Rossi not putting a qualifying tyre in?
george is just a Rossi Basher. I am thinking he is Ace27 himself in disguise . Just ignore him. Lets watch the race

@Graham, I just replied on that post. @Saran Dorairaj, just because you don't like what you hear, don't assume that I'm a Rossi Basher. What the hell are you reading and where did I bash Rossi. You sound like a fanboy. Casey will win this one hands down. Race pace says, Casey, Lorenzo, and Rossi in that order. My predictions are: Stoner, Rossi, and Lorenzo. Rossi's talent will out perform Lorenzo's rookieness, but won't be enough to catch Casey's superior machinery. The Ducati is still 11kph faster down the straight and Casey is a better rider than last year. I wish Rossi was on Michelin's for this race. He'd be on FIRE.

stoner says wait for the race.. but is it true the michelins work better in cooler conditions? can someone please tell me.. i seem to remember this being the case and if it is i can see jorge winning his first gp as he looks very strong.. hope rossi comes on a bit stronger though, if he gets beaten by the likes of lorenzo i think he will have to cal it quits

I don't know where you guys are getting you info. Just look at the analysis on the MotoGP website and it is obvious that Rossi used three qualifing tyres. You don't drop a second using a race tyre. Again look at the analysis for the working better in cooler conditions. They are all running at the same time, so no. Interesting to note that both James and Lorenzo used 4 qualifying tyres whereas the regular guys only used 2 or 3... Looks like a stoner v lorenzo show on race tyres, though Burgess and Rossi are knowen for there special warmup changes... Hope it's a nice close fight... which stoner wins! ;)

George whoever you are
Dice killed off your qualifying tyre BS on the Toseland article, you seem to make it up as you go along, no website has stated that Vale did not use a qualifying tyre.
Now where did to get your Ducati 11kph faster down the staight from, the one that matters i.e. Casey's is only 5.6kph up on Vale and 6kph up on Jorge? 1 Casey STONER AUS Ducati Marlboro Team DUCATI 327.3 46 Valentino ROSSI ITA Fiat Yamaha Team YAMAHA 321.7 48 Jorge LORENZO SPA Fiat Yamaha Team 321.3 52 James TOSELAND GBR Tech 3 Yamaha YAMAHA 315.3 5 Colin EDWARDS USA Tech 3 Yamaha YAMAHA 314.9
and them top speeds are without the benefit of a slip stream so it wont be all that easy for stoner

Actually the Duc was at some point during qualification close to 330 with Stoner on it. The duc is about 15 km/h faster than the spring valve (!) Yamaha's. Stoner will just blast past them like Qatar 2007. I wonder whether they can even stay in his slipstream.
Only the Yamaha factory team have a chance against Stoner and his "lady in red". If Stoner pushes the "launchmode" on the ducati he'll be past Lorenzo by the end of the straight. Rossi will have to claw back from the 3rd row...
DePuniet also seems consistent. He swore to not drop it anymore.
I really hope Edwards and Toseland will get the factory material soon. They deserve it and Yamaha's factory title would be a sure thing.

Graham, The fastest bike this weekend was Marco,327.9km/h,.. Still has him back in, what 15th or so?!?!
Is the race all ready over, I thought this was only qualifying, now Edwards and Toseland should get factory gear just because of a good performance in the desert at night which will not happen again this year. Think about it

Melandri sucks!! I say fly Bayliss into Qatar and let him ride Marco's bike...after all, he has a big enough points lead in WSBK to win both...lol Bayliss would keep JT honest with the Desmosedici's top speed advantage and give Stoner a run for his money....lol
