Valentino Rossi acknowledged that Casey Stoner was in a class of his own during day one at Assen, but was happy to be leading the 'other' championship.
You know, looking at the pics, its a shame the stoner and rossi fans can't have a laugh like they do...and were the ones who sit on our sofa's watching it..
and come on rossi, you lead the world championship, until le mans this was something u hadnt done since Jerez 2007..
your still the man everyone wants to beat out there and the one all the newcomers look to...
go out there tomorrow and stick to casey, its gonna be difficult but your probably the only guy out there who can do it....COME ON ROSSI!
i agree,if anyone can make it harder for stoner on saturday, thats rossi....hope they will find something for the race,or this can be another one-man-dominate season....

It's unfortunate that all we see lately is somebody running away with the lead and maybe a good fight for next three or four positions if we're lucky. On any given day, stoner or pedrossa can take off and win from the front but rossi seems to be one of the few that can fight it out and really make a race of it.
It is what it is I guess but it would be nice to see more dog fights for first place - good old fashined on the edge of your seat stuff.
I'm right there with you Far Canal. People can say what that want about Rossi but, when the man wins, he wins with style 99% of the time! Alot of other racers can't say that. I mean Rossi actually enjoys "Earning" his victories. Not saying that the others don't earn theirs but, Rossi fights from start to finish and doesn't back down till the checkered flag. This season, he seems to be a computer on wheels a little bit. For example, look at the way he rode the race Sunday, he fought hard enough to keep Pedrosa away and kept him from gaining points over him. He wants his crown back and I'm pretty sure he'll get it back this year and I can say that it's about time! GOOOOO ROSSI!
Yes I hope Rossi can pull something out of the bag.
But to be honest things are looking ominus for every other rider apart from casey.
what ever they have done with the electronics on the Ducati has had a massive impact & it seems as if the TC system they have on the ducati is just awesome.
As I said, at Donnington I was watching all the bikes down the hil & then up it & Stoner was visibly quicker without much twitching at all.
I think that pretty much Casey can just open the throttle & the electronics are doing the rest apart from his braking, you have to say hat's off to them though because if that's what's needed to be up front then so be it.
What the other teams need to be concentrating on is improving on their TC, I mean Casey has let the cat out of the bag, now the other teams engineers need to get a grip & get developing some decent electronics of their own.
Jimmy,
I'm with you 100% on what you say above, in fairness it's not the rossi fans though in general who are nasty & twisted is it, it's mostly the aussies that seem to have a bee in their bonnet over a legend that they struggle to come to terms with.
I take your comments as an insult. I am an Australian and I have followed Motogp/500 since the late 80's. I own and ride bikes + do trackdays. The amount of Australian riders I see with Rossi replica helmets, far out weights other rider replicas. I am not a Casey Stoner fan, infact I own a CV Shoei replica and a Suomy TB replica helmet. While I agree there are some silly Stoner fans on this forum, there are the same amount of bitter and twisted Rossi fans as well, the majority of them are kids. I agree Rossi is one of the greats, but I can also see that Stoner won the championship on merit, and if a few bitter posters could admit this, would have more intelligent posting.
What astounding lack of insight, Nigel. There are only a couple of wind-up merchants on here bagging Rossi, and thankfully they've mostly shut up since he's started winning again (thank Allah). Most Stoner fans are definding him, not attacking Rossi.
There are many more Rossi fans bagging Stoner which is understandable given that he has a much bigger fan base. To imply that the number of whinging Rossi fans is somehow less that the whinging Stoner fans takes a fairly distorted vision.
Can someone explain to me why some people are Stoner fans? I agree he is a great rider, but he's boring as hell to watch, and the little I can tell of him personally he's a bit whiney and not at all charismatic. What's the appeal?

TC is a bit of a cheat, they ALL ride with it. To say that ducati has the best TC set up is strange as it's still the wildest bike on the track. It bucks around all over the place. Also watching DP chase VR last week on board with the throttle & Brake graphic, VR had the throttle wide open out of every corner & the Yamaha is very stable. Rossi is leading the championship deservedly on a good, fast, well setup, well supplied, well wired bike. He is 1 of the greatest riders ever. Stoner and Rossi are 2 of the best riders in the paddock and either is capable & worhty of many more championships along with others out there as well. I hope Assen is a great race with lots of passing!! Cheers

Ian so to be a great rider one must be an all round entertainer, pull funny faces, give the media circus nice happy sound-bites, toe the company line, and do a little dance on the podium. Since when does that make a racer? Since inane forums were invented methinks.

terrazzo - spot on. Rossi is a fantastic rider and a great personality - we are lucky to have him in the sport. Stoner is a damn good rider but chronically shy and very unsophisticated. What he cops comes from people with nothing to offer but slagging off. One of the magical riders of our times, Joey Dunlop, would hardly say a word but his riding was sublime to watch. Hailwood was also famously shy and retiring, Doohan would simply not talk to the press, Schumaker was notoriously uncommunicative. What matters is what happens from the lights going out to the flag coming down.

Thanks for the perspectives, particularly the Dunlop comparison. I liked Joey, but he was a bit terse with the words. I guess my issue with Stoner is he takes issue with his negative press, but seems to do little to make people like him. I also get BORED watching a race he wins, and for that reason I like him less than Rossi/Pedrosa/Lorenzo or even Hayden who give me a show. I personally think there is more to racing than winning, and Stoner, while damn good at winning, brings little else. I wouldn't mind Stoner being Champ this year, but if the races are like last year, I won't be watching.

Oscar,
I remember how popular Mick Doohan was around the world and yet he had the personality of a house plant. You have picked some other riders and drivers who are the same.
Well done and well said. Still with the kiddies on here you might as well be talking to a brick wall.
Nah Mick could hold his own against any bouncer Great personality. Only joking.

The comments about Doohan are apt: how many times did he have to fight for a win compared with the times he simply bolted? But I suppose the poster children in this room were not around then. Another bloke who let his on-track exploits do the talking was Eddie Lawson. One of the greats. Couldn't stand Euro journos, especially Poms, so he knew a thing or two about low life sleaze bags. They dissed him soon as he turned up in '83 and continued to do it despite his four World 500 Championships.
