Unfortunately, MotoGP's debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend could be a wet one, with showers (and possibly thunderstorms) currently predicted for all three days of the event.
Wet race? My money is on a Bridgestone top 5 (including Pedrosa)

A wet, slippery surface could be trouble given that last turn onto the main straight with the wall nearby. I hope the wall is further away than it looks in the drawings.

Dani will do wonderfully on the Bridgestones in the rain. The thunderstorms will roll in in the afternoon, so the 2 strokes will likely run in the dry. It may be that the race switches from dry to rain! That would be very exciting indeed! HRC has developed an express elevator mount/dismount system so that Dani can get into and out of the ****pit. - Mrs P

Go brother, if you are a brother :-) but.......believe me, Casey is ok,
Peachy, Unfortunately in the US we don't have so many proper circuits. We use to actually race motobikes in Daytona in the rain which is much more dangerous than Indy.
To answer your question... ***** money!. Why does F1 go to all the places they go and get very few spectators... **** money!

I hope no one gets hurt. From a purely selfish view I want to see them all at Phillip Island. Undoubtably there will be some desperates. Whats the odds on de puniet staying upright. There will be pressure on the americans to push hard. I think that to race at Indy was a bad decision particularly when Turkey was left out. As Bibendum says ***** the money. There are better tracks and the TV brings in heaps.

Trying to confine a road course to the inside of an oval sucks, it limits the design too much. Indy has enough money, they should just buy up some nearby farmland and build a PROPER road course that F1, MotoGP, WSBK could race on. Then they would get money from IMS for the Indy 500/Brickyard 400 and also pull in money from races held at the road course.

bukalaki - having walls lining the straight isn't the issue, it's the walls right next to the corner entrances/exits that are the issue. Look at the drawing of the map and tell me where the run off is when the rider exits the last corner and comes onto the straight? THERE ISN'T ANY RUN OFF!
If you want to say that we're saying BS, then the riders are as well because almost all of the riders have said that it looks dangerous.

Matt nailed it - what a awalll on the straight have to do with a wall at the end of a turn?

Daytona hasnt been raced in the rain in at least 6 years, not in ama series. Ovals and rain dont combine nothing but danger.

Matt, I think a big part of bringing the race to Indy is to promote MotoGP in the states. The most famous track in the country - smack dab in the middled of it. It's much more than ticket sales they are interested in. It doesn't look like a very good Motogp track to me on paper...hope I'm wrong. Hope no one gets hurt.

Brian, Please note I said USE to race in Daytona in the rain and I've been going there sice about 1974. You're correct about 'recent times' but it hasn't always been no racing in rain in Daytona.

f1joke: my thoughts exactly. When I look at the track layout, especially the first turn, I can't help thinking of the consequences that a fall like the one Dani suffered at Sachsenring could have. We all remember how he fell off when braking at high speed and how he went straight forwhat seemed like a hundred meters. Imagine that kind of fall approaching turn one at Indy at full speed. The last turn is less of a concern, as the speeds will be very low and the exit of the turn will heave the riders pointing at the straight, not toward the right side of the track (a video on motogp.com shows this quite well). But the approach to turn one looks VERY unsafe.

just saw an onboard vid of the track.. i noticed that 1 exit of a corner runs parallel to the oval'straight.. will be interesting to see wether or not the riders will cross the white line and by how much they will do accidental cuts.
oh and i agree with some people.. this track is NUTS!! crazy walls everywhere............
any of you ever been to the track? i have. the map is deceptive. the walls in turns 1, 4 and 5 are not right next tothe corner exits. turn i angles quickly off of the oval at corner entry, turns 4 through 5 complex are built on a newly paved infield section, which is divided from the wall by about 50 ft. turn 16, the only turn that actually has an entry within 40 ft. of the oval wall is approached at approximately 30 mph.
if dani crashed going into t1, he would have to slide all the way across the grass throught turn 4, plus another perhaps 100 ft before he approached a wall.
