125cc title rivals, and Aspar Aprilia team-mates, Gabor Talmacsi and Hector Faubel were separated by just 0.044secs during first qualifying at Phillip Island.

Talmacsi, who leads the championship chase by nine points with three rounds remaining, fell at the end of the session but still remained in charge, while KTM's Tommy Koyama and Polaris World Aprilia's Mattia Pasini completed the provisional front row.

The third Aspar of Sergio Gadea heads the overnight second row, with Derbi's Lukas Pesek sixth.
