The 2008 Yamaha MotoGP rider had held a huge 1.47secs advantage with just five minutes to go, before a late effort by Hector Barbera made the Team Toth rider the only man within one second of fellow Spaniard Lorenzo, having lapped 0.717secs behind the #1.

Alex de Angelis took a provisional third, 1.179secs from pole, with Andrea Dovizioso again the top Honda, in fourth.
