The Fortuna Aprilia rider, who will be Valentino Rossi's Fiat Yamaha team-mate in MotoGP next season, was knocked down to second place by Honda's Yuki Takahashi in the closing stages - but then responded in typical style by surging 0.451secs clear on his very last lap.

Shuhei Aoyama made it two Japanese riders on the provisional front row in third, while Alex de Angelis completes the top four on his final 250cc weekend.

Andrea Dovizioso, the third 250GP star to graduate to MotoGP next year, was sixth.
