Starting from twelfth on the grid, Pramac-d'Antin rider Barros was up to seventh by the end of lap one - and looked capable of concluding his 21-year world championship career by battling for a second podium of the season. However, the former seven times 500cc/
MotoGP struck tyre problems soon after and was forced to settle for seventh at the flag, just in front of 2006 world champion - and former Repsol Honda team-mate -
Nicky Hayden.
"Today was a shame because I had a great start, was seventh at the end of the first lap, and catching up to those ahead," recalled Alex, after finishing his 276th grand prix. "The problem that slowed me down came during the sixth lap, when I noticed the front tyre had a problem with the carcass, so I slowed my rhythm so that I could finish the race. I believe that if the front tyre didn't have any problems, I would have fought for the fourth position."
Nevertheless, it was still a combative ride for the 37-year-old Brazilian, who finishes his career without a world title - but having won races in 500GP, MotoGP and WSBK.
"I want to express my gratitude to the whole team, our sponsors, and the whole motocycling world in general for supporting me and staying with me all these years," said Alex. "I am very happy to have done what I love to do, achieved the results that I have, and for these reasons I won't be leaving with sadness."

Honda LCR rider Checa may only have finished 12th during his 220th grand prix on Sunday, but the Spaniard won a considerable battle simply by reaching the finish, having been hospitalised with a severe stomach compliant several times during the Valencia weekend. Unlike Barros, Checa will continue racing next season - in the World Superbike championship.
