Crash.net columnist Bradley Smith got the 2008 125GP season off to a perfect start by leading the first free practice session for the Qatar Grand Prix on Friday evening.

The young Briton, who took his debut grand prix podium finish last season, steered his new Polaris World Aprilia around the floodlit Losail circuit in a best time of 2mins 6.904secs - placing him 0.149secs clear of nearest rival Mike di Meglio.

Another Briton also enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, with rookie Scott Redding third fastest on his Blusens Aprilia. World champion Gabor Talmacsi was fourth, while Danny Webb completed an excellent opening session for the UK in seventh.

First qualifying takes place later tonight...
